Freddy Adu schien auserwählt die Fußballwelt aus den Angeln zu heben. Heute fristet der US-Boy ein unbeachtetes Schattendasein.

München - Freddy Adu hat kürzlich getwittert.

Der US-Nationalspieler zwitscherte ins Web: "Hull oder Aris? Mann, Entscheidungen. Ich habe schwere Entscheidungen zu fällen."

Hull City, Aris Thessaloniki: Wo auch immer Adu enden wird, es wird nicht dort sein, wo man Adu vor ein paar Jahren vermutet hätte.

Von Adu hatte man sich nicht weniger versprochen, als dass er die Fußballwelt aus den Angeln heben würde.

Adu wurde in seinen frühesten Teenager-Jahren als neuer Pele gefeiert. Jetzt ist Adu 20 - und nicht mehr als eine Randnotiz des internationalen Fußballgeschäfts.

Das Märchen vom Wunderkind

Geboren am 2. Juni 1989 in Ghana, gewann seine Mutter 1997 in einer Lotterie eine "Green Card", eine Aufenthaltsgenehmigung für die USA.

Und ausgerechnet dem Land, in dem der Männerfußball ein ewiges Nischendasein fristet, schien so ein Wunderkind dieses Sports zugefallen zu sein.

Lauffreudig, technisch beschlagen, dribbelstark, passsicher, torgefährlich: Adu hatte alle Anlagen - und er zeigte sie früher als alle anderen.

Millionär mit 13

Mit 13 kickte der eingebürgerte Adu in der U 17 des Landes. Mit 14 bei der U-20-WM. Mit 15 in der US-Profiliga Major League Soccer. Mit 16 im Nationalteam.

Ein Sportartikelhersteller gab ihm mit 13 einen millionenschweren Werbevertrag und machte ihn zum Zugpferd beim Versuch, die US-Konsumenten für Fußballartikel zu begeistern.

Adu dribbelte inmitten seiner Teenager-Jahre in landesweiten Werbespots über die Bildschirme.

Er saß bei Talk-Ikone David Letterman auf dem Sofa, die weltweiten Medien überboten sich mit Lobgesängen: Das "Kind mit den Zauberfüßen" nannte ihn die "Newsweek".

Der Durchbruch lässt auf sich warten

Und Europas Top-Klubs warben mit Millionen-Summen um seine Dienste.

Manchester United - wo er auch einmal vorspielen durfte -, Barcelona, Chelsea, Inter, Juve, auch Bayern, Dortmund und Leverkusen sollen interessiert gewesen sein.

Adu landete 2007 schließlich bei Benfica Lissabon. Doch der erhoffte Durchbruch bei einem europäischen Top-Klub lässt bis heute auf sich warten.

Benfica lieh ihn zweimal aus: Erst nach Monaco, dann zu Ligakonkurrent Belenenses. Adu schmorte fast durchgehend auf der Bank und der Tribüne und wurde wieder zurückgeschickt.

Schummelei beim Geburtsdatum?

Was aber ist schief gelaufen?

Skeptiker mutmaßen, Adu sei älter, als er behauptet. Seine sportliche Frühreife, auf der sein Hype beruhte, nichts als Lug und Trug.

Das Magazin "Sports Illustrated" schickte gar einmal zwei Detektive in seine ghanaische Heimat, um den Verdacht zu überprüfen. Sie fanden nichts, was dafür sprach.

"Er wird die Welt nicht mehr im Sturm erobern"

Die schlichte Wahrheit ist wohl, dass Adu zu den vielen Talenten gehört, deren Potenzial sich durch die Unwägbarkeiten beim Heranwachsen eines Fußballers nicht entfaltet hat.

"Wer kein ernsthaft guter Spieler ist, wenn er seine Teenager-Jahre beendet, der wird die Welt nicht mehr im Sturm erobern", bemerkte ein US-Blogger als Reaktion auf die Ausmusterung bei Belenenses.

"Viele Jungspieler sind schon in den Himmel gelobt worden und sind dann von der Bildfläche verschwunden", sagte vor ein paar Jahren ein anderer, der sich im Fußball auskennt.

Sein Name: Freddy Adu.

United States international Freddy Adu has ended speculation linking him with Hull City by saying he has signed a loan deal with Greek club Aris.

The 20-year-old is currently contracted to Benfica but had been on loan with another Portuguese side in Belenenses.

The attacking midfielder told his Twitter followers earlier this week that he had offers from Aris and Hull to choose between but has now settled on Greece.

Adu today wrote: "Alright guys done deal. Signed an 18-month loan deal with Aris FC. A lot of thought and research went into this. Thanks for the support."

Former teenage soccer phenomenon Freddy Adu has reached another crossroads after an embarrassing snub that has cast doubts over his future with the Philadelphia Union – and beyond.


Earlier this season, Freddy Adu received a pair of yellow cards against New York, prompting a dismissal.Adu hoped to revitalize his career by returning to Major League Soccer last year after a difficult stint in Europe but has suffered the ignominy of being dropped from the Union's starting lineup. In last weekend's match against Real Salt Lake, Adu saw just eight minutes of playing time.
The 23-year-old did not start in Wednesday night's MLS regular-season clash at home against the Columbus Crew and played just 13 minutes. Now, as the Union moves towards to the end of a mixed season that will almost certainly see it miss out on the playoffs, the viability of Adu and his $519,000 earnings are being heavily questioned within the league.

"He is kind of like a luxury car," said ESPN analyst and former United States national team star Alexi Lalas. "He is just not practical."

That claim prompted an angry Twitter response from Adu, yet it is a theory that refuses to go away. While Adu's technical ability and talent are beyond question, his versatility, defensive skills and teamwork have all attracted criticism.

The Union's interim head coach John Hackworth has made little secret of his dissatisfaction with Adu, both by limiting his playing time and with a series of public comments. Hackworth berated Adu in the media for an approach he believes is too "self-centered" on the field, an accusation that has plagued the midfielder for years.

Adu, who's scored just three goals in 18 games this season, still has his defenders and spent much of Tuesday re-tweeting positive statements of support about him. That will do nothing to sway Hackworth, however, and may merely inflame a tricky situation further.

There was a time when Adu could have gone elsewhere – to another club, another league or even another continent. Now, though, his options are running out.

"Where is he going to go now?" a leading European soccer agent said to Yahoo! Sports. "He has been all over and never cut it. Everyone knows he can play, but who is going to set up their entire team around one unproven American? I'm glad I'm not touting him around Europe, because you'd struggle to find takers."

The tough part is that Adu's style dictates that he be the star – the central piece or nothing at all. His creativity is outstanding and offensively he has twinkling toes, but his productivity relies on having a great deal of possession, while his defensive abilities have never been especially strong.

Adu has played in Portugal, France and Greece but never found a happy home in Europe, prompting his return to MLS. That has not exactly gone to plan either, with Adu failing to ignite the Union into genuine contenders. As captain, he also couldn't get the U.S. past the Olympic qualifying round as the American squad missed out on the Games in London.

Now it's clear that Hackworth sees the more rugged Michael Farfan, a 24-year-old from San Diego earning just $57,000 a year, as the key to the Union midfield, while Adu, despite all his skill, begins to slip off the radar.

In some ways, Adu is a victim of his own early success. As a 13-year-old he signed a $1 million endorsement deal with Nike. A year later he sealed an MLS contract with DC United and at the time was considered to be the future of American soccer.

As things stand, he has never played in a World Cup, has made only fleeting appearances for the national team and is now struggling to even get a starting role in the domestic league.

He is a thoroughly likeable young man who makes all the right noises about maintaining a positive attitude and finally fulfilling his potential. Sadly, that likelihood dwindles further with each fresh setback.
